Day 2
Running on no sleep from the plane ride the night before, Day 2 seemed like a hazy dream. We arrived at our hotel in a cozy little part of Paris called Bercy Village. The village consists of old wine warehouses which have been converted into restaurants and stores. It's quiet and safe with tons of adorable apartments all around. One of the best parts about Bercy is the huge park. Park seems like a huge understatement. I have walked through it twice now and still haven't seen even half of what it has to offer. Gazeboes, waterfalls, little houses, a playground, weird stone statues, and every type of flower and tree imaginable make up this park. After walking around the city I became acquainted with the broom closet sized "apartment". Picture the smallest hotel room you've ever stayed in and then add kitchen appliances and a stove where there might otherwise have been a counter. Anyways, I realize that complaining is a right I don't have while in Paris. The view is beautiful as well and you can see the tops of the restored wine warehouses.
After getting to know where I was living we rushed off to a restaurant where the food was amazing (dijon mustard sauce and shrimp inside a hollowed out avocado, steak and fries, and a peach in vanilla bean ice cream). For my first night of legal drinking the wine was wonderful as well in unmarked glass bottles that refilled as soon as they were empty.
Once finished with dinner we made the executive decision to forgo sleep, what's a few more hours if the jet lag and exhaustion hadn't yet killed us, and check out the bar scene in the heart of Paris. Mastering the Parisian metro system, we headed out and found ourselves at an Australian bar and Irish bar by the end of the night. It was so much fun and all of us in the program felt so close by the end of it even if it meant we all looked like zombies the next day.
