So today I returned to Les Invalides which is the Army Museum in Paris because last time I only had the opportunity to see Napoleon's Tomb. I have to say I loved this museum. First of all, I'm a huge nerd and I walked through the armory and legitimately kept thinking that this was the kind of armor that people from Game of Thrones would wear. I was so excited and I felt like I understood a lot about the armor simply from that show. I was able to identify the jousting armor and when I saw the children's armor I understood that it was important for young boys of status to have experience fighting. I even found myself looking for animal sigils and identifying family armor and wondering what each animal would say about the person wearing the armor. Needless to say whether it was accurate or not, I got way more out of the army museum than I ever would have in the past. It was also cool to see the actual army uniforms of the French, US, English, Japanese, German, and just about any other army in the museum. So often we see paintings of soldiers and it was weird to be like "yeah, that's what they were wearing in that crazy famous painting." It was also very sad to walk through the world war exhibit and basically walk through the french occupation in world war two and see the the war progress. The way that it was all displayed was outstanding. I felt like I experienced every aspect of the war through the french eyes. I learned about General Charles de Gaulle for whom the airport in Paris is named. I also saw a lot of memorabilia and propaganda that enriched my knowledge of the second world war. It made me really start to look forward to our trip this weekend to Normandy. Seeing the photos of D Day after the visually upsetting displays of world war two portrayed a type of hope that I'm sure was only 1/1000th of what was felt on the day that those beaches were stormed but I cannot wait to see the place where this all happened.
We then went to get burritos at one of my new favorite spots in Paris which I've learned is called Chido: Mexican Street Food. We then had our conversation exchange which was a lot more fun this time around (and not just because there were more cute, young, French guys) but because the young, cute French guys were great conversationalists. I felt like I connected with each of them and I learned something or just had a great conversation with each. There was even one who watched two of my favorite tv shows (misfits and Game of thrones, very rare for anyone who can appreciate this) and who frequented all of the night time spots that we do here in Paris.
In all, I spent most of the day impressed by all that Paris had to offer and I spent the rest of the day being a geek and talking about Game of Thrones. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be cooler (but probably not).
